What makes Lake Windermere – Full Day – Up to 4 People a unique experience ?
Holehird Gardens has been home to the Lakeland Horticultural Society since 1969. However, written records of Holehird go back to the 17th century when a large part of the area was owned by Thomas Hird and his family. Discover a diverse selection of plants and shrubs in these beautiful and picturesque grounds. Relax and stroll the gardens at your leisure. Especially popular during Spring and Summer.
Discover the ruins of a Roman Garrison on the shore of Lake Windermere. A far cry from the peaceful setting it is now, Ambleside Roman Fort was once a bustling lively place, and not always a safe one, with the threat of conflict around every corner.
A gothic revival castle sitting on the shores of Lake Windermere with turrets, towers and informal grounds. 180 years ago, a surgeon and a Gin heiress from Liverpool began building a castle that would only ever have to defend itself from the Cumbrian weather. With all the furniture and artwork long since gone and the last family moving out in the 1920s, the castle has had mixed uses and only opened to visitors in 2011.
Stroll through the courtyard and up to the viewing platform, where you can admire panoramic views of Windermere through coloured panels the Victorian way. Listen carefully for the Aeolian wind harp on a blustery day.
Nestled on the shores of Lake Windermere, this extensive working mill produced literally millions of wooden bobbins vital to the Lancashire spinning and weaving industries. It is the only working bobbin mill left in the Lake District today. The story of the Bobbin Mill is brought to life with tours and an exhibition. Visitors can also see the journey from tree to bobbin first-hand during production on the original belt driven machinery. A hands-on family trail with dressing up for children helps visitors to imagine what it was like to work at the mill.
Running from Haverthwaite at the southern end of the line via Newby Bridge to Lakeside at the southern end of Windermere, this vintage train is a sight to behold for any train enthusiast or those just looking for a sedate and relaxed trip to meet the Steamer at Lakeside.
Enjoy a peaceful cruise up Lake Windermere from Lakeside on one of Windermere Lake Cruises famous steamers. Sit back, relax and capture amazing photos from this perfect vantage point on the water. Truly the best way to appreciate the views of the fells in the distance.
